Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

HES Rating

Q1:  What are these HES Ratings? How do you calculate them?

A1: These are new HES Ratings and they follow the universal grading scale (A-F). They are calculated using the SSQ, HES Audits, Field Feedback and Working Relationship.

Q2:  What do the HES Ratings mean?

A2:  A’s and B’s require no extra steps for work. C’s require a mitigation plan and pre-job meeting where we discuss the gaps that got the contractor to a C. D’s require a mitigation plan, pre-job meeting, trained HES personnel on-site during work and Chevron management approval to use. F’s are not to be used without VP approval.

Q3:  What is an SCQ-V?

A3:  It stands for Standardized Contractor Questionnaire - Verified. All of our contractors are required to fill this questionnaire out before working with Chevron in the GOM.  Here is the link to the third party’s web site, to fill out your SCQ-V: http://www.isnetworld.com/

Q4:  Do you have written HES expectations for contractors to reference?

A4:  We have developed a Contractor Handbook that went into effect July 1, 2003. It clearly describes all HES expectations for work pereformed for GOM Chevron.

Q5:  What is this “Working Relationship” piece of the HES Rating?

A5:  This is 10% of the HES Rating and is automatically given to all contractors. If a situation occurs that has Chevron management concerned about a contractor’s commitment to HES, this 10% may be partially or completely be taken away. This determination will be made by a management team within Chevron GOM.

Q6:  How do I find out about my HES Rating?

A6:  If you have not already received notification of your HES Rating, and no one else in your organization has either, this means we have no contact information for your company. You need to contact the Contractor Safety Specialist via email.

Q7:   How do I improve my HES Rating?

A7:  First, you need to request a list of gaps for your company that has led this HES Rating. Once you know your gaps, you will know what to work on to improve your HES Rating. After you have addressed your gaps and you feel that you are auditable, please update your ISN SCQV and make sure you save the update. That night, your data will feed over into our internal SDMS and update your HES Rating. If the letter grade changes, anyone listed as a contact for your company will receive an automatic email notification.

Q8:   Why did I not get an email about my HES Rating?

A8:  You are not currently listed as a contact for your company in our Supplier Data Management System. Email us to get added as a contact for your company.

Q9:   What do I do if I never go onto CVX property? Do I really need an HES Rating?

A9:  Please describe the services you provide to Chevron and how often you go offshore in an email to us and we will consider your company for an exemption to our HES Rating process. You should hear back within 1-2 weeks.

Q10:   How do I update my contacts who receive the updates from the Supplier Data Management System?

A10:  Email us with the name, title, address, phone, company name and email address for each person.

Q11:   Can the contractor view their HES Rating somewhere?

A11:  Not at this time. We have plans down the road to set up our contractors where they can log on with a user ID and password and view this data in a secure fashion. This will not be available for a while.

Q12:   Can ISN see my HES Rating?

A12:  No. ISN only sees the point score for your SCQ-V, and does not know how that translates into your HES Rating.

Q13:   Does CVX GOM use NCMS for verification of the HES data in the SCQ-V?

A13:  Not at this time.

Q14:   What other updates can the contractor get from the Supplier Data Management System?

A14:  The contractor, if set up as a contact with a correct email address, will receive a notification on all HES Rating letter grade changes, field feedback forms submitted and any recognitions submitted.

Q15:   Some of the questions in the SCQ-V don't apply to me. Why am I losing points for them?

A15:  Currently, the SCQ-V questions that are being graded by CVX apply to every contractor that has to have an HES Rating assigned. If you are unsure why a particular question should apply to you, email us.

Q16:   When exactly does the contractor need to have the quarterly TRIRs updated?

A16:  The schedule is: Q1 due by May 1, Q2 due by August 1, Q3 due by November 1, Q4 due by February 1.

Q17:   What needs to be put in the CVX-specific TRIR questions?

A17:  The contractor needs to indicate here what hours were worked on CVX property or in the case of marine vessels, when they were chartered and the number of recordables for the specified time frame.

Q18:   What if we didn't work for CVX for that quarter? What do we put as the answer for CVX-specific TRIR questions?

A18:  You can select Not Applicable. Bucket: "Pocket Guidelines"

Q19:   How does the contractor get copies of the small blue book called Contractor Pocket Guidelines?

A19:  The contractor needs to request copies from the CVX rep who hired him/her for work.
