Behavior-based safety applies modern behavioral concepts to improving
safety performance. It is built on research showing that, while safe
facilities and detailed operating procedures are important, most
accidents are related to behaviors somewhere in the organization that
increase risk. To eliminate incidents, everyone must focus on fostering safe
behaviors. Behavior-based safety concentrates on behaviors rather than
on attitudes, and emphasizes encouraging safe behaviors.
GATOR, Generating Awareness Through Observation and Review, is
the behavior-based safety process developed by employee representatives
in the Gulf of Mexico Business Units. GATOR includes
parts of several processes that previously existed within the Gulf
of Mexico. GATOR also incorporates the best practices of internal
and external operating companies, including our competitors. To
minimize risks and improve safety performance, a consistent process
has been developed that uses a common format, involves employees,
and has the support of management. Below are the top at-risk categories
identified through first quarter 2004.
- Walking and Working Surfaces
- Ascending/Descending Stairs
- Barriers & Guards
- Pig Trap Hammer Doors
- Off-the-Job Safety
- Fall Protection
